TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is the definitive surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1 hour. Excess, obstructing prostate tissue is removed from inside the urethra, allowing for a stronger urine flow and improvement in both obstructive and overactive urinary symptoms.

Symptoms that can be improved with a TURP procedure include: slow urine stream, intermittent urine stream, hesitant urine stream, urinating frequently in the day or night, urinary incontinence, blood in the urine, bladder stones and recurrent urinary tract infections due to poor bladder emptying.
