The penile prosthesis is the gold standard surgical treatment for severe erectile dysfunction. It was developed more than 40 years ago and has excellent success rates. There are two main types of penile prosthesis:

  • A 3-piece inflatable device with saline filled cylinders. It can be inflated for use by depressing a pump in the scrotum.
  • A malleable device with “bendable” cylinders that does not need to be manually inflated. It is often chosen for men with limited manual dexterity.

Surgery takes approximately 2 hours and patients are discharged from the hospital early the following morning.  Recovery is minimal but patients are restricted from strenuous physical exertion for 6 weeks. Risks of the surgery include bleeding, infection and potential need for removal of the device, mechanical failure of the device over time, possible slight shortening of penile length, possible erosion.
